Please write to me via email if you prefer.
Yes, of course criticism is a creative endeavor, but I think it is actually more difficult (and more helpful to all) to focus on what is strong in the work, especially in a first book!
My email address is at my webpage: www.enidshomer.com
EnidEnid Shomerhttp://www.enidshomer.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6360167919886596728.post-59220140356815995332010-05-04T22:45:29.797-04:002010-05-04T22:45:29.797-04:00Steve,

I'm not a part of the poetry scene--I know nobody--I just keep this blog, because I like to read and write about books. I'll be sure to write a post about the book after I've had time to read and think about it, and address it to you. For me criticism is a sort of creation. It's saying, "Hey, I've noticed you. Let's talk." And it seems you and I have created something together, I think, no?. Even if it isn't poetry per se.

With respect,
SteveSteve Fellnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11383222975171349962noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6360167919886596728.post-16648249129595981582010-05-04T17:17:53.466-04:002010-05-04T17:17:53.466-04:00Forgot to say that you should read DIRT RIDDLES, t...Forgot to say that you should read DIRT RIDDLES, the Williams prize winner last year and also by a gay poet. Or have you? I wonder if you think the aesthetics are the same. Certainly the prosody is not. Poets are very influenced by each other, a point you seem not to address much.
Anyway, I think the best thing is not to focus on the poets' weaknesses, but on their strengths.
With best wishes,
Enid Shomer
It is so easy to criticize, so much harder to create, as I am sure you know...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6360167919886596728.post-53198578964512673872010-05-04T13:11:39.379-04:002010-05-04T13:11:39.379-04:00A mentor of mine, someone I greatly admire, once m...A mentor of mine, someone I greatly admire, once made reference to a common "gay sensibility" she had identified in our poetry, relating in some way to a concern with the aesthetic.

I asked, "There's only one gay sensibility?" I was kind of cheesed about it.

I'm pretty sure we wouldn't try to limit other communities to just one way of seeing the world.
